Mesoamerican Registry of Attacks against Women Defenders: April to June 2023 – Preliminary quarterly data

1,189 attacks against 319 women defenders and 24 organizations between April and June of 2023

  • 2 women defenders were assassinated during the second quarter of the year, both of them in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico: Teresa Magueyal Ramírez, searching defender of the collective “A Promise to Keep”; and Ivanna Pantoja, trans woman defender of LGBTTTIQ+ rights.

  • 687 of these attacks occurred against collective actions in defense of human rights, affecting at least 204 women defenders.

  • 445 were of a personal nature, affecting 127 women defenders.

  • 57 were aimed at 24 organizations.

  • Harrassment (13%) was the most frequent form of aggression, followed by threats (7%) and lack of legal protection in arbitrary trial procedures (5%).

  • Governments continue to be our main aggressors, bearing responsibility for 6 out of every 10 attacks registered.

 

During the first half of 2023 we have registered a total of 2,641 forms of aggression.
