Kenia Hernández is an Amuzga Indigenous lawyer and woman human rights defender who has been unjustly deprived of her liberty since October 2020 in Mexico for her defense of territory. The possibility of her release is closer than ever, as the Attorney General’s Office has asked the Federal Roads and Bridges institution (CAPUFE) to negotiate a reparation agreement that would allow for her release. This was made possible thanks to the accompaniment, solidarity and pressure from numerous organizations, social movements and entities inside and outside the country.
The National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Mexico and the Mesoamerican Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders (IM-Defensoras), as members of the Support Committee for Kenia Hernández’s Freedom, have been accompanying the woman defender and carrying out various actions to denounce her case and the conditions in which she is deprived of her liberty, as well as to demand her release. These actions have included:
-
Accompanying and promoting visits from organizations and authorities to the prisons where she has been held.
-
Maintaining permanent communication with human rights bodies that have been following her case.
-
Accompanying Kenia inside the prison, supporting the actions that she has conducted along with other prisoners.
-
Providing support to Kenia’s family to make it possible for her children to visit her.
-
Along with the collective of accompanying organizations, preparing a report about the serious human rights violations that Kenia has endured during the judicial processes and her imprisonment.
-
Following up on the campaigns and promoting solidarity responses from different allied organizations and human rights entities.
At the current stage of the process, when the possibility of Kenia’s release is closer than ever, it is vital to unite all national, regional and international solidarity efforts to ensure that the demand for her freedom is made effective and not subject to appeal. This is why we call on all our sisters, friends, allies and social movements and organizations in Mexico, Mesoamerica, Latin America and the rest of the world to mobilize for Kenia and, through her, for all political prisoners:
