On Sunday, 22 June, unknown persons raided the offices of feminist organization Equis - Justice for Women and stole computer equipment containing sensitive and strategic information about their work. As soon as they learned of the situation, organization members alerted their contacts and allied organizations regarding the risk of identity theft that could result from the theft of the equipment.
The National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Mexico and IM-Defensoras express our concern about this attack, which is a serious violation of the significant and widely recognized work carried out by EQUIS - Justice for Women in defense of women’s rights and access to justice.
We condemn these acts that seek to inhibit their defense work and place the integrity and safety of their members and the people they accompany at high risk.
We demand that the authorities carry out an immediate and prompt investigation to identify those responsible for this attack, and that they urgently implement protection measures to guarantee access to justice, truth and reparations for members of the organization as well as the security of its facilities.
Finally, we renew our call to human rights organizations and to the national and international community to express solidarity and join in the demand to ensure the safety of the organization Equis - Justice for Women and all the women who are part of it.
