The National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Mexico express our profound concern and demand that Elisa Altagracia Bonilla Carrillo – a 38-year-old searching mother (buscadora) who disappeared on 27 August 2026 in Mazatlán, Sinaloa – be found immediately and alive.

Her family filed a report on 28 August and the Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office activated the Alba Protocol, acknowledging that she is at risk and could be the victim of a crime. Elisa is the mother of Kevin Alexander Guerrero Bonilla, disappeared since 18 October 2025 in Mazatlán, Sinaloa. Since then, Elisa took action to search for her son.

In a context that is especially serious for searching women in Sinaloa, Elisa’s disappearance cannot be investigated as an isolated incident; consideration must be given to her role as searching mother, the actions she took to find her son and the risks associated with her work as a searcher.

We demand:

- An immediate, thorough and diligent search to find Elisa Altagracia Bonilla Carrillo alive, using all available human, material, technological, and forensic resources, without delay or omission.

- That the authorities immediately exhaust all lines of investigation, including those related to her work as a searching mother and the actions she took to find her son Kevin Alexander.

- That the investigation take a human rights approach and include a gender perspective.

- That immediate comprehensive protection measures be adopted for her family and for the people participating in her search.

- That the Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office provide periodic and transparent updates on the progress made in the search and the investigation, avoiding any form of re-victimization or criminalization of Elisa, her family and people who search for the disappeared.

- That the authorities guarantee the right to search and recognize the work of searching mothers and women as human rights defense work, adopting effective measures to prevent new attacks against them.
